From Classroom to Career: A Student Explores Marketing & Engineering at RPP Containers
A High School Senior Explores Marketing & Engineering at RPP Containers®

Choosing a career path can feel overwhelming—especially for high school seniors standing on the edge of graduation. For one local student, a recent visit to RPP Containers® provided a firsthand look at how creative and technical skills come together in the real world.
During his job shadow experience, he spent the day with the company’s Manager of Marketing Services and Director of Custom Engineering, gaining valuable insight into two very different—but surprisingly connected—career paths.
Starting on the Floor: Engineering in Action
The day kicked off with the Director of Custom Engineering, who introduced the student to the heart of RPP Containers—the manufacturing plant. Walking through the facility, he got an up-close look at how bulk containers are customized, assembled, processed, and prepared for customer use.
During the tour, the director explained how an engineering background plays a critical role in developing custom solutions. From concept to completion, each container is designed with specific customer needs in mind—whether that means improving durability, maximizing storage efficiency, or accommodating unique materials.
The student learned how engineers rely on tools like CAD software, prototyping, and testing to bring ideas to life. But beyond the technical skills, he also saw the importance of problem-solving and adaptability. No two projects are exactly the same, and engineering often requires creative thinking to develop the best possible solution.
Seeing the production process firsthand helped him connect the dots between design and reality—how an idea on a screen becomes a physical product used across industries.
A Creative Lens: Marketing Services in Action
After gaining insight into the engineering side, the student transitioned to shadowing the Manager of Marketing Services. Here, the focus shifted from how products are made to how they’re presented and communicated to customers.
With a background in graphic design, the marketing manager demonstrated how visual communication plays a critical role in shaping a brand’s identity and walked him through the wide range of responsibilities involved in the role. From creating digital content and managing the company website to developing product sheets and social media campaigns, every project centered around clear and effective visual communication.
The student saw how design elements like layout, typography, and imagery are used to simplify complex information and make it engaging for different audiences. He also learned that marketing isn’t just about creativity—it’s about strategy. Understanding customer needs, analyzing performance data, and maintaining consistent branding are all essential parts of the job.
He also learned how marketing decisions are driven by data, customer needs, and industry trends. It wasn’t just about making things look good—it was about making them work.
Bringing It All Together: Capturing the Product
To wrap up the day, the student had the chance to see marketing and engineering intersect in a hands-on way. Working alongside the Manager of Marketing Services, he helped photograph a custom bulk container—an experience that highlighted the importance of presentation in the final stage of the product journey.
He learned how product photography is carefully planned to showcase key features, angles, and details that matter most to customers. Lighting, composition, and perspective all played a role in capturing an image that was both visually appealing and informative.
It was the perfect example of how the work done by engineering is ultimately translated into compelling marketing materials that tell a product’s story.
A Valuable Perspective for the Future
By the end of the day, the high school senior walked away with a deeper understanding of two distinct career paths—and how they complement each other. Engineering focuses on building the product, while marketing ensures it connects with the right audience.
More importantly, he saw how both roles draw from foundational skills—whether it’s the technical precision of engineering or the creative problem-solving of graphic design.
Experiences like this not only provide clarity but also inspiration. For this soon-to-be graduate, the visit to RPP Containers offered a clearer vision of how his interests could shape his future—and showed him that successful careers often live at the intersection of creativity and innovation.
